Why do people get food sensitivities — how do you get rid of them?
Symptoms of food sensitivities include:
Ongoing flareups of an autoimmune condition, and more.
For instance, people with Hashimoto's may find certain foods worsen their thyroid symptoms, whereas someone with psoriasis may find their skin keeps flaring up.

If you're like many patients, you visit a healthcare professional with your complaints and they do an allergy or food sensitivity test. When you get the results, you may feel even more confused.
Why do people develop food sensitivities?
It comes down to a combination of things that typically involves losing immune tolerance—when the immune system becomes hyperactive to foods. Loss of immune tolerance involves immunological breakdowns that make one more prone to food sensitivities and allergies.
Factors like leaky gut can lead to loss of immune tolerance. (To read more about immune tolerance and foods, check out this article.)
So can the way modern foods are grown and processed. Things like hybridization, GMOs, pesticides, aflatoxins in grain storage, and food additives trigger reactions to foods in various people.
Other reasons for food sensitivities include T cell dysregulation or autoimmune cross-reactivity (when the immune system mistakes body tissue for an antigenic food protein).
Can you get rid of food sensitivities?
The answer is maybe, depending on what the mechanisms are.
Some actions, such as repairing a leaky gut or loss of immune tolerance may calm the immune system enough so a person can introduce foods back into their diet. However, something like celiac disease likely requires a lifelong avoidance of gluten. Food allergies, which cause a more immediate reaction than food sensitivities, involved different immune dynamics and approaches.
